Tom Skinner, drummer for The Smile and Sons of Kemet, returns with his long-awaited solo album Kaleidoscopic Visions, arriving on September 26, 2025, via Brownswood Recordings and International Anthem, with streaming to follow on October 17 .
Skinner set the tone for this project with the title track, an intuitive piano improvisation that became the creative anchor for a hypnotic, psychedelic sonic world . On the record, he’s joined by a tight ensemble—bassist Tom Herbert, cellist Kareem Dayes, and woodwind players Robert Stillman and Chelsea Carmichael—creating a fluid, conversational texture throughout .
Standout guest features include Adrian Utley (Portishead) on guitar, Meshell Ndegeocello on “The Maxim,” and Khari Lucas of Contour on “Logue,” each adding emotional depth and tonal contrast to the core group .
Track titles like “There’s Nothing to Be Scared Of,” “Margaret Anne,” and the title piece suggest a journey inward, mixing cinematic atmospheres with moody improvisation across ten immersive compositions .
Post‑Voices of Bishara—his previous 2022 release—Kaleidoscopic Visions represents a bold step forward in Skinner’s evolving solo voice: jazz-rooted yet open to psychedelia, texture, and collective nuance.
