Jerk | As Night Falls

‘as night falls’ is the latest release from Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Jerk (Joshua Kinney) – a moody, shape-shifting EP that traces the arc of a single night. Made in close collaboration with drummer and longtime friend Martine Wade, the project moves through moments of tension, introspection, and groove-driven release.

Across eight tracks, Kinney weaves together jazz, funk, trip hop, and experimental electronics into something that feels both raw and cinematic. From the drum and bass sprint of the title track to the creeping funk of ‘stealthy, she moves!’, the EP touches on influences from MF DOOM to The Isley Brothers, Sam Gendel to Dilla, but never stays in one lane for long.

Kinney handles nearly every instrument on the record — saxophone, flute, guitars, rhodes, synths, and more — while Wade brings fire and feel behind the kit. The result is a collection that’s spontaneous and carefully sculpted all at once.

At its core, ‘as night falls’ is about leaning into the strange energy of night, its stillness, its beauty, its weirdness. It’s jazz with sharp edges and soft shadows. Music for night walks, late drives, and open windows.
