To Cy and Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 introduced a new side of Alabaster DePlume—the Manchester-born poet, saxophonist, and composer known for his theatrical performances and spoken-word intensity. Here, his focus shifts to quiet, wordless melodies: serene, intimate, and deeply human. These instrumentals, once gentle interludes between his vocal works, became the centerpiece of a collection that radiates calm and compassion.
Released in early 2020 via International Anthem, the album quickly found new meaning during global lockdowns, offering comfort and clarity in a time of isolation. Its unhurried pace and fragile beauty carried a healing quality—“an antidote with ancient sonic characteristics,” as the label described it.
The record also marked the beginning of a lasting collaboration between DePlume and International Anthem, leading to GOLD (2022), Come With Fierce Grace (2023), and A Blade Because a Blade Is Whole (2025). Years later, To Cy and Lee remains one of the label’s most cherished releases—an enduring document of stillness, empathy, and quiet resilience.
