Greg Foat and Sokratis Votskos join forces on Impressions of Samos, a sunlit, transportive album shaped by the landscapes and atmosphere of the Greek island. Backed by The Giorgos Pappas Trio, the record blends Foat’s cinematic jazz language with Votskos’ roots in Greek traditional music, creating a sound that feels both grounded and drifting.
Recorded on Samos itself, the album captures a strong sense of place. Warm Rhodes chords, gentle piano lines and analog textures move alongside bouzouki, subtle rhythms and open, spacious arrangements. There is no rush here. The music unfolds slowly, like heat over stone, carrying a quiet, meditative energy throughout.
Rather than leaning into virtuosity, Impressions of Samos focuses on mood and detail. Each piece feels observational, almost like a series of sonic sketches. Light, sea, and memory are constant undercurrents, giving the album a reflective, almost nostalgic tone without becoming sentimental.
The collaboration works because it stays restrained. Jazz and Greek influences are not forced together, but naturally intertwined. The result is a cohesive, atmospheric record that feels intimate and expansive at the same time, anchored in location but open in interpretation.
