Tropics | Nocturnal Souls

Since first surfacing at the turn of the decade, Chris Ward aka Tropics has proved incredibly hard to pin down, musically at least. While his debut album on Planet Mu was a psychedelic ambient treat, he’s since gone on to deliver full-length excursions that variously doff a cap to dream pop, indie-rock, dubstep and hip-hop. Noctural Souls, his first album in four years, offers a further evolution, drifting between blue-eyed soul takes on psychedelic pop, woozy lo-fi drum and bass, dreamy art-rock, acoustic Balearica and nu-jazz. That it all not only hangs together but also makes perfect sonic sense is testament to his unique musical voice.
