Two distinctive voices in contemporary European jazz come together on METAKOSMOS, bringing their individual approaches to rhythm, improvisation and musical space into an intimate dialogue. Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch, known for his hypnotic, rhythmically structured compositions and his concept of ritual groove music, meets Greek pianist and composer Tania Giannouli, whose work moves between contemporary classical music, free improvisation and cinematic soundscapes.
The encounter unfolds through intricate piano textures, shifting rhythmic patterns and a remarkable sensitivity to silence. Bärtsch’s minimalist structures and repetitive motifs find a natural counterpart in Giannouli’s expressive, often lyrical playing, creating a musical conversation that moves between meditative stillness and moments of unexpected intensity. Rather than following conventional melodic development, the compositions evolve through subtle variations, dynamic contrasts and an intuitive exploration of resonance.
METAKOSMOS is a deeply atmospheric and contemplative recording, where two individual musical languages gradually merge into something entirely their own. An exploration of sound, time and space that rewards attentive listening and reveals its complexity through restraint rather than excess.
