Raw energy, spontaneous interaction and an uncompromising spirit of improvisation define the musical encounter between Finnish-American guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Both musicians have spent decades exploring the outer edges of jazz, free improvisation and experimental rock, developing highly individual approaches to their instruments.
PING brings their contrasting musical voices into a direct and often unpredictable dialogue. Björkenheim’s electric guitar moves between distorted textures, fragmented melodic lines and explosive bursts of sound, while Nilssen-Love responds with an extraordinary range of rhythmic ideas, shifting effortlessly between intricate percussion and powerful, driving patterns. The absence of a conventional rhythm section leaves considerable freedom for both musicians, allowing the music to evolve through instinctive exchanges and sudden changes in intensity.
Despite its abrasive moments, the recording reveals a remarkable sensitivity to dynamics, space and the subtle details of collective improvisation. PING captures the excitement of two adventurous musicians pushing beyond familiar structures, creating music that feels immediate, restless and entirely alive.
