Austrian collective Shake Stew have carved out a distinctive place in contemporary European jazz, combining hypnotic grooves, spiritual intensity and the raw energy of collective improvisation. Led by bassist and composer Lukas Kranzelbinder, the ensemble is known for its unusual instrumentation, featuring two bassists, two drummers and a powerful horn section.
TEN ONE TWO captures the band’s unmistakable sound, driven by interlocking rhythms, repetitive bass figures and expansive horn arrangements. Drawing inspiration from spiritual jazz, Afrobeat, psychedelic rock and the adventurous spirit of the 1970s, the music moves between trance-like passages and explosive moments of improvisation. The interaction between the two rhythm sections creates a dense, constantly shifting foundation, while the horns alternate between meditative melodies and fierce, energetic statements.
Despite its rhythmic complexity, the music remains remarkably direct and physical. There is a strong sense of collective momentum throughout, with each musician contributing to an evolving musical conversation. TEN ONE TWO is a vibrant exploration of groove, freedom and the communal energy that lies at the heart of Shake Stew’s music.
